About the role

Alsys is a family-run business based in Leiden. We build modular laboratory robots for sample preparation, with each module required to operate with an accuracy of a tenth of a millimetre, year in, year out, for customers all over the world. Every new design must be chemically proven, mechanically robust and practical to build and maintain. As a Robot Engineer, you will design mechanical modules for our robot platforms, from the initial sketch to the production-ready drawing. You will work closely with the production planning team, the workshop and, often, directly with the customer to arrive at a functional and cost-effective design. You will report to the Engineering Manager.

What you'll do

  • Designing mechanical modules for the High-Performance Robot and Compact Robot platforms
  • Creating 3D models and production drawings in Fusion 360
  • Carrying out design studies to translate customer requirements into an automation solution
  • Determining and validating tolerances and fits in collaboration with the workshop
  • Selecting components and materials based on function, cost and lead time
  • Building and testing prototypes, and refining the design based on test results
  • Collaborating with production planning to make a design ready for production
  • Drawing up and keeping technical documentation and bills of materials up to date
  • Contributing ideas for improvements to existing modules based on feedback from the field
  • Participating in client meetings to clarify technical requirements

  • A higher professional education (HBO) or university (WO) degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or a similar discipline
  • 3 to 7 years’ relevant work experience in mechanical design
  • Proven experience with SolidWorks, Fusion or similar 3D CAD software
  • You have already overseen at least one product from concept to production
  • Knowledge of machining techniques, plastics and mechanical assembly
  • You are able to specify, design and validate a module independently
  • Good command of Dutch and English, both spoken and written

Nice to have

  • Experience with pneumatics or motion control
  • Knowledge of GD&T and tolerance analysis
  • Experience with small-scale or mass production
  • An affinity for laboratory equipment or analytical instruments
  • Category B driving licence

  • 23 days’ annual leave
  • Bonus linked to the company’s operating results
