About the role
Alsys is a family-run business based in Leiden. We build modular laboratory robots for sample preparation, with each module required to operate with an accuracy of a tenth of a millimetre, year in, year out, for customers all over the world. Every new design must be chemically proven, mechanically robust and practical to build and maintain. As a Robot Engineer, you will design mechanical modules for our robot platforms, from the initial sketch to the production-ready drawing. You will work closely with the production planning team, the workshop and, often, directly with the customer to arrive at a functional and cost-effective design. You will report to the Engineering Manager.
What you'll do
- Designing mechanical modules for the High-Performance Robot and Compact Robot platforms
- Creating 3D models and production drawings in Fusion 360
- Carrying out design studies to translate customer requirements into an automation solution
- Determining and validating tolerances and fits in collaboration with the workshop
- Selecting components and materials based on function, cost and lead time
- Building and testing prototypes, and refining the design based on test results
- Collaborating with production planning to make a design ready for production
- Drawing up and keeping technical documentation and bills of materials up to date
- Contributing ideas for improvements to existing modules based on feedback from the field
- Participating in client meetings to clarify technical requirements
What we ask of you
- A higher professional education (HBO) or university (WO) degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or a similar discipline
- 3 to 7 years’ relevant work experience in mechanical design
- Proven experience with SolidWorks, Fusion or similar 3D CAD software
- You have already overseen at least one product from concept to production
- Knowledge of machining techniques, plastics and mechanical assembly
- You are able to specify, design and validate a module independently
- Good command of Dutch and English, both spoken and written
Nice to have
- Experience with pneumatics or motion control
- Knowledge of GD&T and tolerance analysis
- Experience with small-scale or mass production
- An affinity for laboratory equipment or analytical instruments
- Category B driving licence
